L’escapade de famille avait tout pour être idyllique : une côte isolée, un pique-nique avec les somptueux paysages de la Nouvelle Zélande en toile de fond, une joyeuse photo de groupe… C’est sans compter sur la rencontre malheureuse avec deux vagabonds, qui transforment le road trip en virée cauchemardesque. Pour son premier long-métrage, James Ashcroft nous embarque dans un redoutable voyage où les personnages slaloment entre la peur, le sadisme et la rage. Derrière cette rencontre, c’est toute l’histoire d’un pays et ses cicatrices coloniales qui ressurgissent. Traversé de bout en bout par une tension extraordinaire, le glaçant Coming Home in the Dark viendra refroidir l’atmosphère estivale.
