The movie

In a rural Malaysian community, Zaffan is going through puberty at an alarming rate. Worse still, hysteria takes over the school when a rumour about demons haunting the girls starts to spread.

Zaffan is a 12-year-old girl who is full of life and has a problem with authority. As soon as she enters puberty, Zaffan experiences unsettling physical transformations. While she tries hard to hide her strange metamorphosis from her classmates, rumours of a dangerous presence in the school bathrooms start to spread. One by one, the school girls fall prey to a mysterious illness. Soon, mass hysteria ensues…

After winning the Grand Prize from Critics’ Week at the latest Cannes Film Festival, Tiger Stripes brings its impudence and rage to Neuchâtel! Malaysian folklore, body horror, and teen movie tropes clash in this powerful tale of a woman’s emancipation. A supernatural horror gem, somewhere between Carrie and Ginger Snaps!

Amanda Nell Eu studied directing at the London Film School, and perfected her skills with the development programmes offered by Locarno Filmmakers Academy and Berlinale Talents. In 2017, she finishes her first short film, Lagi Senang Jaga Sekandang Lembu, shown as part of the competition in Venice, and then in many festivals, where it wins many prizes. She continues the following year with Vinegar Baths (NIFFF 2019), which also won multiple awards. Tiger Stripes is her first feature film.
