YAJI AND KITA-THE MIDNIGHT PILGRIMS
Kankuro Kudo
Japan, 2005, 124', Swiss Premiere
The movie
Yaji and Kita, a couple of gay samurai, who are as passionate as they are crazy, decide to leave Edo (ancient Tokyo) to join the temple Ise, a sort of Garden of Eden likely to cure Kita of his dependence on hard drugs and other hallucinogenic substances. True to the genre – we cheerfully go from musical comedy to road movie, passing through the classic samurai film – and time, the two accomplices will live through an initiative voyage sprinkled with encounters and adventures, one always more surprising than the other. A veritable cinematographic trip, Yaji and Kita is not easily summarized. Adapted from a manga signed by Shiriagari Kotobuki, who was himself inspired by a classic in Japanese literature from the XIXth century, Yaji and Kita is a nutty comedy which holds true to pop surrealism. However, Kudo Kankuro is not merely content to fly off the handle, but he also offers a bold painting of modern Japanese society and of its idiosyncrasies.
