The movie

After the death of her boyfriend, a young woman, Dawn, falls into a deep depression. Following a suicide attempt, her shrink sends her to a family house to rest on the ocean: a place where she has felt safe and experienced happiness. Stuffed with antidepressants, she attempts to build herself up and get a hold of life. One day, while walking on a deserted beach, she discovers a creature half-fish half-foetus washed up on the shore. Feeling at first repulsion, she quickly becomes obsessed by this mutant organism made of fluids as slimy as they are orgasmic. Obsessed by the creature to the point of picking it up, feeding it, and feeding off it, Dawn develops with it an organic and sensual relationship that is exclusive and dangerous. Treated by a narrow margin of madness, survival and sex, Venus Drowning constitutes a real descent into the torments of depression and dependence. Cronenberg style, Andrew Parkinson uses flesh to give an organic vision of unconscious drives – whether they be sexual or destructive.
