The movie
Madeline endeavors to follow a natural way of life and wishes to give birth far from the hospitals to which she is fiercely hostile. While resisting the pressure put on by her mother-in-law, she successfully convinces her husband to agree upon this. Subsequently a road accident kills her spouse, and annihilates any reactivity from the baby. Madeline insists on continuing her pregnancy and eventually gives birth to a dead child. Yet the child miraculously returns to life! Nevertheless, the mother realizes that the small Grace is not quite normal… Without being a pure horror movie, Grace cannot very easily be pinned down. The way it treats the complex topic of the mother-child binding is both sincere and disconcerting; especially when one realizes how far the heroin is ready to go in order to protect her child. By violating the sacred maternal love, the film reaches a degree of unequalled dramatic fear. After this experiment, maternity will never appear as soft in your eyes!
