The movie
Prisoner of a fearsome clan chief, the savage warrior One-Eye is mute and, as his name suggests, one-eyed. When the young boy Are helps to free him, the pair boards a Viking ship and sets sail for Jerusalem. But a trouble-free voyage does not await the travelers – instead, their ship loses its way in the fog, forcing the passengers to disembark in a new and hostile land. This foreign territory, which seems strangely familiar to our hero, hides an invisible and horrifying enemy. Armed with testosterone and axes, here’s the opportunity for One-Eye to crush a few legs, bust some brains, and ultimately, ponder some philosophical questions about his true nature and origins. Inspired by a story his mother told him as a boy of five, Refn gives this tale a gorish twist for the ready and waiting public. Boosted by the surprising performance of Mad Mikkelsen, Valhalla Rising will delight thrill-seeking spectators. Allow yourself to be carried off on this mythological acidic high, raw while at the same time introspective.
