The movie
Doesn’t a weekend boat-trip sound lovely? It does to three London couples, who plan a trip through the marshes with such enthusiasm that neither the shipowner’s icy welcome, nor the dreary look of the local teenagers gets them down. And what of the warnings, the no trespassing signs, the strange noises, and the ghost-like apparitions? Our companions’ happiness continues to shine through the grayness – who wants to bother decoding these morose signs? And yet, this haunted swamp is giving off a very foul odor! Their calm composure will finally take a hit only when a large stake slices through their boat and, with it, the stomach of one of the crew members... Nick Cohen uses all the right generic codes with a result that is as efficient as it is frightening. With amazing sound effects and camerawork that follows the protagonists up close, The Reeds leads the viewer slowly yet surely astray. Where’s the danger coming from? Watch out, still waters run deep!
