Family reunions can be a real nightmare, as old disputes are often rehashed and dirty secrets revealed, exactly like at the Davison’s, where the meal seems pretty tense. However, just as the first shouting match breaks out, the situation takes an unexpected turn when a masked gang armed with axes storms the home. Then begins a struggle for survival. But in this particular game of cat and mouse, the cat is not necessarily to be believed... With this amazing survival film, Adam Wingard revisits the horror subgenre of home invasion with surprising results. The director draws from his models, but deliver his per- sonal version of the genre. It’s mainly You’re Next‘s atmosphere and Wingard’s mastery of suspense that makes the film such a joy to watch, as the director is able to punctuate the story between each death in a way rarely seen on screen today. To top it all off, it’s all set to an eighties score that John Carpenter would have been proud to use !
