As their usual baby-sitter is unavailable, Dan and Joyce Thompson enlist the help of their friend Anna, so that they can go out for dinner and celebrate their anniversary. At first, the kids are delighted with their new minder’s apparent leniency. Soon though, it becomes pretty clear that Anna is not exactly the person she appears to be… Her strange behaviour becomes more and more troubling as time goes by, which forces the children to gang up against her, hoping it won’t be too long before the parents come home. Michael Thelin delivers a horrifying psychological thriller that leaps from its initial realism into an outlandish Baroque atmosphere, with which he skilfully deconstructs the codes of the babysitter-gone-bad genre. The protagonist’s mental disorders — brilliantly played by Sarah Bolger — open the door to a world of nerve-racking terror, enhanced by the sadistic nature of the film’s twists and turns. If you already found it hard to entrust your children to someone else, then Emelie is unlikely to reassure you !
