Sabu
Japan, 2002, 102'
The movie
Kenichi Asakura, a man who suffers from severe migraines and always conforms to the Highway Code, is kidnapped by three small-time bank robbers. They are chasing their accomplice who left with the booty. In what turns out to be a low-speed road movie, each protagonist will have to confront himself with his fate in sometimes hilarious situations. Sabu has always been interested in showing everyday people finding themselves in extraordinary situations in order to entertain his audience. Drive is a very good illustration of this; it is based on attractive characters, coincidences, and memorable moments, be they hilarious or tragic. Here, Sabu also successfully combines comedy and fantasy with social satire on contemporary Japanese society.
