The movie
Jakob is a young police officer working in a remote village in DE, surrounded by dense forest. For some time, a beast seems to be on the loose in the area. Of a discrete and rather introverted nature, Jakob must learn to assert himself during the investigation. Everything changes when he finds himself face-toface with a mysterious man dressed in a robe and armed with a sword. For one surreal night, a samurai will wreak havoc in both the village and Jakob’s life. It’s hard to believe that this masterful film is actually Till Kleinert thesis. Borrowing from European fantasy films as well as Japanese animation, the young filmmaker delivers a haunting and subversive work, where symbols and aesthetics gradually revive German gothic romanticism. With elegance and sensitivity, Der Samurai explores its protagonist’s subconscious, by painting a picture of social ostracism and loss of control. Symbolic and powerful.
