Night Fishing
Park Chan-kyong
Republic of Korea (South Korea), 2010, 33'
The movie
While a man fishes on the banks of a secluded lake, the sky darkens and one of his fishing poles starts shaking madly; could it be a big catch? As crazy as it might seem, it turns out to be a young woman... When she starts talking to the fisherman about his deceased daughter, he understands that she must be a shaman, acting as a bridge between the world of the dead and the living... In this surreal tale, Park Chon-wook and his brother Chan-kyong handle with intense feeling the theme of losing a loved one. Filmed with an iPhone, the movie is visually stunning, and yet also manages to combine traditional Korean religious imagery and symbolism in a convincing and realistic way. Sublime!
