Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre
Kemp Júliús
Iceland, 2009, 84', Swiss Premiere
The movie
A group of tourists on a whale watching tour ends up adrift when the ship’s captain is killed in an onboard accident. The tourists are rescued by the small crew of an old whaling ship, but their initial relief turns into terror once they realize that the whaler’s crew members are far from the friendly, carefree sailors that they had appeared to be. They are all bloodthirsty maniacs! The ship’s passageways quickly become a deadly maze where the hapless passengers must learn to dodge harpoon blows to survive… It’s not a mere coincidence that the title sounds familiar. Indeed, Júliús Kemp’s film is an off-the-wall maritime homage to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre – Gunnar “Leatherface” Hansen even makes an appearance in the credits – all in the setting of the fairy-tale-like Iceland landscape. Chopping up vacationers for want of plucking their feathers is here a national sport, especially if they splatter and scream in the process. This is a work that will give nightmares to the Icelandic tourist office for a long time to come.
