The Chaser

Republic of Korea (South Korea), 2008, 125'
The movie
When one of his « protégées » disappears, a former cop now pimp begins an investigation that leads him on the path of a serial killer. From then on he only has a few hours to find the poor girl who is held in an abandoned house. A wonderfully controlled variation of thriller and comedy, The Chaser once again proves the excellent health of the Korean genre cinema which excels in rebounding intrigues as it twists the spectator’s nerves. This dark movie manages to impose a diabolic rhythm, while evoking the streets of Seoul and depicting its cops and thugs. He skillfully diverts the conventional uses of serial killer movies by not building the investigation around the murderer’s intelligence, but by using the incompetence of the police as a main thread instead.
