The movie
Former rock musician Kenji - currently managing a mini-market - has to face a disconcerting phenomenon: catastrophic predictions that he wrote as a child are actually taking place. The cause of all those wrongdoings seems to come from Friend, the leader of an apocalyptic sect. But who is that lunatic? And will Kenji be able to counteract the end of the world that he himself imagined? This adaptation of Naoki Urasawa’s everlasting manga mixes two time dimensions: the tribulations of a gang of 1969 youngsters are mingled with Kenji’s investigation in 1997. Mystery and suspense are counterbalanced with a sweet and sour nostalgic atmosphere. Broaching themes like manipulation, fanaticism and terrorism; 20th Century Boys is also an ode to rock’n’roll and to friendship.
