Tears for Sale

Serbia, 2008, 86', Swiss Premiere
The movie
After the first World War, Serbia is trying to rebuild. But the conflict killed most of the male population and the country’s demography stagnates. This situation is particularly alarming in distant rural areas. It is the case of Ognjenka and Boginja›s village, where these two sisters have never experienced any intimate relationship with a man. Chosen by the local witch, they leave in search of men capable of ensuring the perpetuity of their land. Featuring about 40 minutes of special effects, Tears for Sale emerges as one of the most ambitious projects in Serbian cinematographic history. However, the movie is far from just relying on that device. It is a real fairy tale for adults, endowed with a frenetic rhythm and a baroque aesthetic. It brilliantly combines a tragic historical reality with local imagination. Get yourself ready to discover women from every angle in this fantastic and bold adventure. It is a movie that is entertaining and at the same time intelligent.
