The story of Blue Beard is narrated by two young middle-class girls during the fifties. In the book, after their in debt father death, Anne and her younger rebellious sister Marie-Catherine are expelled from the convent school. Nothing good seems possible for them until the day they learn about Blue Beard, a baron who is looking for a new wife. The man has a dreadful reputation but is so wealthy… By challenge, Anne decides to get married to that dangerous figure. This small budget movie gives away a surprising reflexion on the feminine childhood, with its dreams and contradictory drives. The remarks of the two young narrators, who can’t help commenting on what they’re reading, give rhythm to this intimate version of Blue Beard, carrying us into the universe of hanged women and of others who escape from that fate. Catherine Breillat discloses here a special variation of the story of this « serial killer », which will please all those who got scared while reading the original tale.
