The movie
In Japan, a few centuries after the terrible battle of Dannoura (1185), the war between the white clan led by Genji and the red clan led by Kiyomori over the possession of a seam of gold is laying a small village to waste. One day, a triggerhappy stranger without a name, but with a troubled past, arrives in the village. Takashi Miike seasons the spaghetti western with soy sauce, and the result is wacky as was to be expected. Shot entirely in English on sets combining a Far West atmosphere with traditional Japanese elements, Sukiyaki Western Django is a real tribute to the films of Sergio Leone and Sergio Corbucci, in the same way that Tarantino’s Kill Bill referred to classic Samurai movies. It is therefore not surprising to find Quentin Tarantino starring as a poncho-sporting cowboy expert on six-shooters.
