The Red Shoes

Kim Yong-gyun

Republic of Korea (South Korea), 2005, 103', Swiss Premiere

The movie

One night in the subway, Sun-jae grabs a pair of enticing red shoes that seemingly belong to no one. Very quickly the famous slippers stir up greed in her entourage, leading the young woman into an infernal spiral. Indeed, anyone who attempts to walk off with the shoes that is not the original owner, is followed by a bloody curse. A new reading on Andersen’s fairy tale Korean style, Red Shoes exasperates the stress level of artisan cobblers. Truly, this story of malediction whose weight falls on a pair of shoes distils some bloody sequences that can impress both shoe professionals and foot fetishists alike.
