The movie

Masuoka played by Shinya Tsukamoto, is one of those typical modern young men who are to be seen all over today’s Japan. A fanatic cameraman, he films everything that moves, searching for the ultimate experience: true fear with no remission. Slightly paranoid, Masuoka is convinced that beneath Tokyo lies a world inhabited by blood-sucking robots: the Deros. As he is roaming the underground world of Tokyo, he discovers a shackled, mute and naked young girl. He takes her home and attempts to bring her back to life, oblivious to the fact that this could be the first step toward his own death. Shot with a digital camera and limited resources, “Marebito” is similar to Shimizu’s other movies: chilling and terrifying. But the radical gory aspect of the movie gives it a gripping feeling.
