Diableries: Aventures stéréoscopiques en Enfer

2019

The NIFFF 2019 offers a unique exploration of proto-cinema.

Produced in exclusivity for the NIFFF by anthropologist Philippe Dallais and photo historian Denis Pellerin, this multimedia exhibit includes 50 dioramas plus a 3D slideshow from Brian May’s Diableries collection, a slideshow, as well as a 3D film created by Unanico Studios and the London Stereoscopic Company.

As an avid collector of stereoscopic photographs, Brian May spent decades putting together all 182 Diableries – dioramas made of clay figures that represent everyday life in the Underworld – made in France between 1860 and 1900. At the root of the supernatural imagery associated with hell and moving skeletons, these tableaux were highly influential on the first fantastic cinema sets. Seen through a stereoscope, they offered an experience akin to augmented reality. For years, Denis Pellerin studied these forgotten pictures that used to be massively popular, but whose meaning had got lost in the mists of time.

Monday, July 8th from 5pm to 6pm at the Péristyle de l'Hôtel de Ville: A signing session of Denis Pellerin is planned in the exhibition.
